The A Team: Introductions

The A Team: Meet my team. My team is composed of five members: Harrison, Trevor, Kaely, Alex and myself. While Alex and myself are the only two from here in North Carolina, we all have different backgrounds that are very complex and unique. Being that she is the only girl in the group, I will introduce her first because, as always, ladies first. Kaely is from Gladwyne, Pennsylvania and is here currently undecided in what she wants to study. She chose to travel such a long distance from home for the very fact that she just wanted to be further away from home and do her own thing. She is the oldest of five and is really into playing sports; lacrosse is her favorite. Her other hobby is to travel which coincides perfectly with her reason to come HPU. Next, we have Alex. My fellow North Carolina resident is from Charlotte, North Carolina. Along with also being undecided here at HPU, Alex has won the state championship in soccer, and, interestingly, can juggle. Alex has one brother and his family is originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Harrison is up next. Harrison is Grosse Pointe, Michigan, a suburb outside of Detroit. While learning about Harrison, he let us know that he is actually legally blind. However, this does not prevent him from being able to quote the entire movie of Caddy Shack. Lastly, we have Trevor. Trevor is here from Hilton Head Island and is here to major in business. Like my entire group, Trevor is into sports, specifically Lacrosse where he is on the club Lacrosse team here at HPU. That's my group, hopefully you learned a little bit of each member!

Samuel Morse

After graduating college at Yale University in 1810, Samuel Morse wanted so badly to become a painter and an artist. However, Morse's father did not like this idea and set him up to be a  bookstore/publisher in Boston, Massachusetts. The first thing that comes to my mind when thinking of Morse is, of course, Morse Code. Behind all of this, Morse was an avid believer that slavery was a positive and has even been quoted saying "Slavery per se is not sin". With this and what we're talking about in class, this a very "out-there" quote. Something like this being said in today's world would cause an uproar so big we may have to big in the army to end the conflict. According to many of those that argued for pro-slavery in the class, slaves were essential so that the white man could be more profitable. While Morse may have believed this as well, it is hard to overlook that he just flat out believed you should have slaves because God was just okay with that. ...

Confederate Statues

 Christopher Carbone, titled his article,  Which Confederate statues were removed? A runninglist.   Just the title itself made me question the entire article. Has this really got so out of hand that there is enough conflict to make a list out of it? The article lists places like Texas, Florida, New York, California, etc... as states quickening to remove all statues. Carbone writes, "Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh told reporters she wanted to move “quickly and quietly” to take down four Confederate statues or monuments". While I am not sure how I feel entirely about this situation, I do know that it is not helping our nation any. For some, these statues express a very key moment in this nations history and to other it represents a figure of hate a racial segregation. Personally, I feel they should be left up because they have been there for so long already and people need to learn how to accept that everything is not perfectly suited to them.

In Class Mock Trial- 11/15 (Brown vs. Board)

The issue at hand here is whether or not the 14th amendment was violated. Below I have arguments from each side of the case. Brown: Separating the races is a direct violation of the equal protection law under the 14th amendment. The claim made was that whites were heavily favored by separating the schools. African Americans were sort of left behind which showed in the self esteem and potential future of the students because it was lower than that of the white students. The schools for the whites were far more advanced than the African American schools. Schools for African Americans were not funded nearly as much as the white schools were. African American schools lacked important facilities such as libraries, gyms and even a functional cafeteria. From a religious standpoint, segregation is wrong because we are made in the image of God. If we are all one in God, then no separation should ever by implemented. Precedents: McLaurin v.
